Fort Walsh, in the Cypress Hills of southern Saskatchewan was until 1968 the RCMPs remount ranch. When it was decided that it was to be shut down and the site would be taken over by the National Historic Sites it came under my responsibility. I had a meeting with the RCMP in nearby Maple Creek, to discuss the necessary timing and procedure of the transfer. It was a very cordial and successful meeting and, I thought, beneficial to both parties and so went on into rather late hours in the evening. Never-the-less I planned to return to Calgary that night so I could go to work the next morning. It would make for a long day but I was exceptionally busy at the time.  I was a little surprised but appreciated the final comment of the RCMP officer commanding there, who as I was leaving and almost as an after-thought said, “By the way, my boys are out on the roads tonight.” I wondered if he knew that I had a reputation for driving some-what beyond the speed limit. Anyway, I saw nothing of “his boys” that night.
